Leicester's 'cramped' bus station will be a thing of the past as a £10.5 million revamp is set to expand facilities and instigate future growth.

Eleven new bus stands form part of new station design plans at Haymarket bus station, according to bbc.co.uk, which will allow the number of buses to increase from 40 to 60 each day.

In addition, the existing roundabout will be replaced with a new road layout while several commercial buildings will be demolished to help the bus station increase in size.

The council is also looking to bid for an additional £3.5 million in funding from the Department of Transport in order to help the station redevelopment process go even smoother.

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby hopes the revamped station will ease bus congestion and queuing as well as as provide a modern facility "fit for current needs and future growth".

He commented on the bus station plans to thisisleicestershire.co.uk: "Charles Street is right at the heart of bus provision in the city and is the place that serves routes to the estates but what we have there currently is pretty chaotic and not fit for purpose.

"These plans will enable much-needed improvements to be made to city centre bus travel, as well as making the area more attractive for all visitors," he added.
