Rochester is set to be the recipient of a new railway station as Network Rail lifts the lid on its £26 million project, reports build.co.uk.

The new station forms part of Network Rail's commitment to 'increase capacity on the railway' and deliver 'better facilities' for passengers in the area. It is also part of a wider investment in the wider county, totalling £135 million, as the number of passengers using the railway continues to grow.

The new station design outlines how Rochester's new rail facility will have three platforms, all of which will be able to accommodate longer trains with up to 12 carriages, according to breakingtravelnews.com.

In addition, facilities for passengers like baby changing facilities, cycle racks and retail units will be upgraded, while step-free access and improved station car parking will also be installed.

Fiona Taylor, Network Rail's route managing director for Kent, commented on the plans: "The proposed new station will deliver a huge boost to Rochester and Medway. It will provide passengers with improved facilities and give better access to the town centre and surrounding area.

"The new station will be able to accommodate longer trains than the current station, helping boost capacity and providing more seats for passengers. An integrated transport hub will provide better links to other types of public transport," she added.
