MP Ed Balls supports bid for revamp at Morley train station

MP Ed balls has urged transport ministers to include Morley in their funding programme for inaccessible train stations around Britain.

Mr Balls is an MP of the West Yorkshire market town and has written to the secretary of state for transport, Patrick McLoughlin, in an attempt to gain funds for the local station's revamp.

On top of the existing grant, an additional £100 million was committed to the Access for All scheme over summer. The funds are largely being used to provide UK stations with step-free access from entrance to platform, which the government hopes will benefit disabled people, those with reduced mobility and parents with small children.

Cited by yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Mr Balls said it was great news that ministers are examining Morley's case and remained optimistic that funds would be made available.

"I want to make sure Morley gets its fair share so we can get the improvements our station so desperately needs," claimed the MP.

According to a statement at edballs.co.uk, local residents have also complained about problems with parking, lighting and other facilities at Morley train station - hinting that beyond its access issues, Morley may need a completely new train station design. However, frequent services running to and from nearby Leeds are thought to be some of the best in the area.

Mr Balls claims that despite its strong links with the city, Morley station "isn't up to much" and that he will be seeking clarification from bosses on specific improvements to be made.
