Haywards Heath Railway Station gets redevelopment go-ahead

Haywards Heath Railway Station finally got confirmation for a redevelopment scheme after more than 20 years of waiting and false starts.

Midsussextimes.co.uk reported that the train station design would be looked at, with buildings being refurbished and a new space created for retail/restaurant use. The planning officer for Mid Sussex Council, Steve Ashdown, said: "This would go ahead if it was approved. It is commercially viable and would re-liven and revitalise this part of the town."

Constructionenquirer.com reported that the Haywards Heath revamp is the fifth scheme set up a number of years ago to develop brownfield land in South East England around the railway stations.

This project is a £17 million development that will also see the transport interchange being improved. It has actually been dramatically reduced from an original £200 million scheme that previously included plans for 700 houses as well.

One local resident commented: "It is a more realistic plan and more Haywards Heath."

The work is set to start during the summer and be completed by the later part of 2014. The exterior of the station building will be refurbished to included new signage, lighting and canopies. Pedestrian connections linking the car park and the station will also be improved.
