Edinburgh marathon weekend sees siege of litter hit the streets

The "disgusting" and "appalling" amount of litter on the city centre streets of Edinburgh is causing fingers to be pointed at the council for their resource distribution, according to localuknews.co.uk

Reported in full by scotsman.com, last weekend saw bins overflowing and litter strewn across the streets of the city centre with questions now being asked about the proper distribution of resources by the council.

The frequency of collections around the city has been questioned ever since a change implemented in September which has seen some bins left unemptied for weeks at a time.

The council may want to consider installing more outdoor litter bins in preparation for big events like the marathon as Edinburgh Council refused to place the blame on staffing levels for the event.

Nonetheless, the rubbish left over from the marathon has seen some residents at their wits end.

Joyce Morrison, 49, of Livingston, claims she saw council workers taking pictures of the sheer amount of rubbish due to their shock over its volume.

"They said that the mess had been left over from the day shift," she said.

"I can honestly say I've never seen a mess as bad as this in the city centre. It seems like madness that the streets, especially Princes Street, are allowed to get into that state when we are supposed to be welcome tourists into the city," she added.
