Bedford bus station set for much-needed revamp

A planning application for a revamp of Bedford bus station and Allhallows car park has finally been submitted, according to bedfordshire-news.co.uk.

Bedford Borough Council has scraped together £8.8 million to spend on the development, which includes a new bus station design with improved facilities for passengers.

In addition, a new travel centre will offer travel tickets and other services while Allhallows car park is set to be modernised with another car park earmarked on Greyfriars.

Dave Hodgson, Mayor of Bedford Borough, believes the current state of the bus station "lets our town centre down" and has been in need of improvement for decades. Furthermore, residents have also expressed disdain "decades ago" at the state of the bus station.

Speaking to bedfordtoday.co.uk, he said: "The easy thing to do would be to simply wait for rosier economic times to come and enable the redevelopment to take place at some point in the future, after so many years of waiting.

"However I want the very best for Bedford Borough....That's why we have worked to identify savings, underspends and efficiencies to make this crucial redevelopment possible, in defiance of the economic conditions," he added.

Plans are expected to be presented to a committee on June 24 while the deadline for public responses to the consultation is May 31.
