A Multi-Laned Covered Walkway for Leeds Bradford International Airport

19 February 2013
Macemain Amstad are pleased to announce the completion of a multi-laned airside passenger walkway at Leeds Bradford Airport which links 6 outlying aircraft parking stands with the existing terminal building. The business case for the walkway was founded upon the following key elements.

  • Increasing passenger numbers through the terminal building
  • Eliminating the requirement for an airside bus service for arriving and departing passengers to the outlying aircraft stands
  • A significant reduction in the turn around time for aircraft thereby increasing capacity
The walkway having a nominal foot print of 5 meters wide by 250 meters long contains three internal lanes each segregated from the other by toughened glass framed screens. Each lane being linked to aircraft parking stands by electronically locked sliding doors activated by ground crew security passes. This configuration arrangement supports an arrivals lane and two departure lanes internal to the walkway. Departing passengers can commence boarding within minutes of an arriving aircraft completing its disembarking process.

The walkway links with four departure gates and the arrivals doors at the terminal building and incorporates access to all three lanes at these positions. Capacity within the walkway is upwards of 750 passengers at any one time.

Macemain + Amstad were appointed as the Principal Contractor having responsibility for design, production and installation of the walkway. The operation of the aircraft stands was maintained throughout the construction period which involved the completion and hand back of the walkway in three distinct phases over a 6 month duration.
