Glasgow Airport set for improvement works ahead of Commonwealth Games

Glasgow Airport looks set to receive £10 million for upgrade works in time for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, bbc.co.uk reports.

The Scottish city looks set to welcome around 6,000 athletes and tens of thousands of visitors next summer when it hosts the Games through July - August. In order to show off the airport in its best light but also ensure travellers have a safe and easy journey through its terminals, the owners have pledged to invest £10 million to improvements over the coming year.

This cash injection is just one part of a wider investment scheme, which will see some £220 million spent on improvements to the airport in the ten years to 2021. These investments, it is hoped, will improve the airport for the seven million people who use it every year, not just those visiting for the Commonwealth Games.

Work - which will involve upgrading the toilets and could see the introduction of new steel benches - isn't set to begin just yet, as planners are waiting until October in order to let the summer rush pass before undertaking any potentially-disruptive operations.

Speaking to dailyrecord.co.uk of the work, Glasgow Airport's managing director, Amands McMillan, explained: "The eyes of the world will fall on Glasgow during 2014 and we fully recognise the important role we have to play in helping deliver a successful and memorable Commonwealth Games.

"We see ourselves as being the gateway to the Games and not only will this significant investment ensure we continue to provide high quality facilities for passengers, it will help create a lasting legacy for Glasgow Airport and the city."
