Blackburn town centre could be set for a massive rejuvenation if a joint plan submitted by various authorities are approved, reports build.co.uk.

Maple Grove Developments and Blackburn Cathedral have lodged a joint planning application to begin the 'ambitious' Blackburn Cathedral Quarter Scheme.

The development, which registers at 88,000 sq ft, plans to build all kinds of properties and utilities to regenerate the area, including a 60-bed, six storey hotel, offices, restaurants, shops, a new public square and new bus shelters/interchanges.

Furthermore, a new Clergy Court will house 'senior members of the Clergy' and place staff next to Blackburn Cathedral.

Speaking to homesandcommunities.co.uk, Councillor Dave Harling, Executive Member for Regeneration at Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, said: "This is very exciting news for the whole borough. The development of the Cathedral Quarter is part of an ambitious 15 year vision which we have been determined to see become a reality.

"Despite the cuts, the Council and its partners have worked hard to ensure that this £25 million scheme still goes ahead. The development will bring much needed jobs to the town and will be an impressive addition to the town centre which has already seen a new shopping centre, new market and new youth zone," he added.

A decision on the application is expected to be delivered by November 2012.
